Building Master Plan: Phasing
The Master Plan envisions a series of three phases. Phases I and II consist of renovating and enhancing the existing building. Phase III includes the addition of a wing on the East side of the library.
Phase I
Installation of a high-density shelving tower – Provide for long term storage and preservation of book and archive collections; re-purpose original stack core, and permits reallocation of existing shelf space to other functions.
HVAC Upgrade – Replace existing system, stabilize internal conditions; energy efficiency
Expansion and relocation of library teaching classroom – Provide expanded teaching area and state of the art instructional technology; place adjacent to Information Commons. This area supports First Year Seminar and information literacy instruction.
Enhance student Information Commons area – Provide students with high-end computing technology, and space for service support from librarians and library technology staff.
24 Hour Study Area – Provide for extended service hours
Consultation offices and meeting room – Centralize consulting and technical support services; host Teaching Institute
Expansion of Cowles Café and Social Area – Provides for completion of area for informal study and gathering. The Cowles Café has proven to be a major success and serves as a major gathering point for the Drake community. This area also supports students during extended hours during Finals.
Upgrade Library Conference Center – Provides for refurbishment and technical upgrade of the libraries second floor conference area. This area is currently in high demand for small to mid-size campus and community events, in addition to functioning as a student study area.
Refurbishment and Betterment – Replace existing carpeting, furnishings, and wall treatments; better reflect contemporary student needs – all floors; restrooms

Phase III
Phase III consists of an addition to the current building, which will include:
- Relocate entrance
- Add second elevator
- Relocate and expand café
- Relocate and expand Knowledge Commons
- Relocate staff operations
- Technology service and staff area
- Additional group, individual study
- Institute for Exceptional Teaching
