Achieved:
May 20 thru June 9- book collection moves
June 10 thru 19 – temporary moves & relocations on 1st floor, preparatory work on 2nd floor
June 20 – construction begins on 2nd floor
June 24 – construction area on 1st floor closed to public
July 15 – steel reinforcement of the 2nd floor slab begins
August – construction concludes on 1st floor
September – construction concludes on 2nd floor
September – high-density shelving installed 2nd floor
September – Periodicals consolidation project begins
October – Move in to new Archives offices & collection areas begins.
8/8 -- the slab reinforcement is finished and the push is on to get first floor ready before the start of the fall semester.
7/22 - The structural gridwork.
7/22 - Structural steel beams added to the 2nd floor slab. Inset shows the attachment of the beams to the pillars.
7/19 - Insulation and vapor barriers are installed in the new Archives collections area.
7/16 - The structural steel being added to the 2nd floor slab.
7/15 - a busy day at the Library . . . cutting steel outside, drilling concrete inside.
The bolts that will attach the reinforcing steel beams for the second floor slab.
7/15 - Waiting for the steel beams to arrive.
7/3 - Walls come down on 1st floor.
6/21 - Demolition procedes in the new University Archives space on the 2nd floor of the Library.
6/20 - the crane approaches! Materials for the project will be lifted into the 2nd floor through one of the exterior windows.
6/20 - the construction area is draped with plastic to keep down the dust of demolition.
6/20 - All the preliminary work is finished. 2nd floor ready for construction to begin.
6/11 - the end of the great move. Will they all fit in their new location on the ground floor east side?
6/11 - the end of the great book move. The last few books on 2nd floor west will move soon.
6/11 - the next stage of construction requires carpet and the underlying floor tiles to be removed.
6/10 - the push is on to finish the last of the shelving!
6/10 - Our "temporary" compurter lab will consist of 12 computers, 6 mac and 6 windows.
6/10. In order to reinforce the floor above the computer lab, all the computers must move.
6/10. Almost ready for the next phase. The west side of the 2nd floor is largely emptied of books. The remainder are expected to move today.
Book carts are lined up waiting for shelves to be constructed as half of the book collection at Cowles Library moves from 2nd floor to the Ground floor.
Workers from Jones Library Sales begin the move of 200,000+ books to the ground floor. 05.31.2013
Books from the second floor will be relocated on the Ground floor, east side. Current periodicals are transferred and shelving is removed from the area to make room.
Surplus shelving is hauled from the building for recycling.
Removal of books and shelving on the second floor, west side, is underway.
The floor above the computer lab will be reinforced. Books have already moved out of the area, the computers will follow in a couple of weeks.
